Author bio
Many authors may seem far away after one finishes their books. This is not the case with John Green. John Green makes every effort possible to communicate with his readers, be it through the Youtube channel he shares with his brother, Hank; through meeting them at events such as book releases and VidCon; or through social networking sites such as Tumblr or Twitter. It is very clear that Green thinks much of his readers.
John Green always wanted to be a writer. “I always thought being a writer was, like, being an astronaut or playing in the NFL or something. It always seemed to me a very unrealistic dream” (“Biographical“). Luckily, when Green grew older, he realized that this was a more realistic dream than previously thought. While working for the magazine Booklist, an editor helped and encouraged Green to consider writing as a career (“Biographical”). Green has many other “jobs” other than writing. He also makes and edits videos for multiple Youtube channels, helps run record companies with his brother, amongst other “jobs” (“Biographical”).
John Green does not have many tragic stories about his life growing up. “I was extremely fortunate. My parents loved and encouraged me; my brother was empathetic and supportive; my friends (when I had them) were lots of fun without being too dangerous” (“Biographical”). However, like many kids, Green wanted to be part of the “popular” kids. “…I often felt isolated and alone and scared. I was quite nerdy and dearly wished that I could be popular” (“Biographical”). Many of Green’s characters share the same wish.
John Green has lived in various places throughout his life. He grew up in Orlando, but went to a boarding school in Alabama for high school (“Biographical”). After high school, Green moved to another part of the United States. This time, he moved to Gambier, Ohio to double major in English and Religious Studies (“Biographical”). He later lived in larger cities including Chicago and New York (“Biographical”). Green now lives in Indianapolis, Indiana with his wife and two kids.
